Kanawha Plaza "Invisible Plaza" Competition - 2013
Sponsored by the James River Green Building Council. This competition aimed to revive the existing Kanawha Plaza on Downtown Richmond to its former glory. The objectives of the project call for a small scale intervention that will cater to the 1970's character of the existing structures and reflects a modern twists that redefines the use of the Plaza.
The concept "The Tracks of Change in the City of Seven Hills" proposed a series of movable modules that are responsive depending on what activity the space needs. The tracks tell a story on how Richmond evolved from a canal oriented city to what now is a train port city of the Mid-Atlantic Region. As the modules slide thru the track it also symbolizes the moving progress of the city. Also engraved within the modules are the letters F-R-E-E-D-O-M that boldly represents the city's fight for liberty.

Virginia AIA Prize Competition - 2013
Sponsored by the Virginia Society of American Institute of Architects , the project calls for a new typology of a mixed use facility that tends to convene a Fire Station , Retail and Community Center. To be situated in the in the Garden City of Beauregard Alexandria, this facility shall stand as a landmark and a monument for community connectivity.
The concept strikingly based it's form from an infinity symbol that addresses how the different functions can actually be interconnected. From my point of view, it was unnecessary to visually separate the uses of the facility thus the solution was to actually combine the spaces so that they work together. Atop the Mobius form is a green roof that has an infinity bike loop that lends it self to the community to promote alternative sustainable transportation.

International Student Velux Award - 2012
Sponsored by the Velux Company, this competition aimed to push the limits of what daylight has to offer. Themed as the "light of tomorrow" the competition brief tackles on the possibilities of daylight as source of energy and a new sense of place. The project could range in varied scales from urban to as small as residential interventions.
The concept dubbed "Velux Vortex" is a series of kinetic modules that investigates the possibilities of creating Light , Wind and Shade energy conversion. During certain parts of the day a module could turn to a solar tracker, a wind turbine and a shading device. With the interplay of light shadow and movement the concept integrates motion as a solution for capturing energy and creating a new sense of place. As these vortex shaped canopies move, the motion creates variations of shadows that redefines spaces.

Meteorolohiya Manila - 2010
This project was my Undergraduate Thesis from the University of Santo Tomas entitled "Meteorolohiya Manila: Severe Weather Surveillance and Climate Change Exploratorium". As Climate Change worsens around the world, the need for facilities that tackle on severe phenomena related to meteorological and astronomical research arises. In line with the goal to predict and evaluate weather in a more precise and life saving manner, the center shall also house facilities that would cater to public awareness and education.
Thus this proposal roots itself as a research institution and public information dissemination center. The complex is composed of two main branches of functions and both forms are inspired from the patterns of the storm. The Northeast complex is the public domain where the climate change center is situated. It houses museums, exhibits, education centers and conferences that cater to the public. The private domain is composed of the research and weather prediction center. Two monumental structures tower over the site which are the Observatory tower and the Communications tower.

Tidewater Community College Visual Arts Building -2013
This was the comprehensive fourth year studio undergraduate project for the students at Hampton University. It was comprised of two semesters of which we had to work with a group for the first semester to develop a master plan and the next semester dealt with putting together working documents on a building we choose to develop.
The Proposed Tidewater Community College Visual Arts Building in the campus of Virginia Beach will be part of the proposed 250,000 square feet creative arts complex. It is situated East of the Proposed Digital Arts Building, west of the Science Building and south of the New Student Center. The 66,000 square foot facility will house all the future and present artisans and crafters of the TCC community. The facility will house studious for elements of glass, metal, pottery, ceramics, painting and wood. The concept deals with the interpretation of textures, transparencies and densities of the artifacts into a building.

Japanese Row House Retro Fit - 2012
As part of the comprehensive design studio project for 4th year students in Hampton University , the challenge is about retrofitting Tadao Ando's Azuma House into a residential facility for a handicap one armed wheel bound potter. To blend the needs of the client and existing architecture is challenge fro this project. Limitations abound both the ability of the person to move on a very limited footprint of a Japanese row house.
The concept then strategizes to design "Maximum Innovation but Minimal Intervention thru technology". The design proposes simple solutions that help for ADA circulation such as ramps and lifts creating more open movable spaces for the potter. It also showcases a skylight with rain water harvesting technology. It aims to retain what was original crafted by Tadao Ando's mastery. A Zen wall that allows natural rain to flow thru the wall surfaces in the courtyard rooting itself from Tadao's original idea to bring in the natural elements.

National Disaster and Preparedness Center Calamity Management -2009
Situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a land frequently ravaged by Tropical Storms and strong Typhoons is the Philippines. Manila in the pearl of the orient has been through a lot of natural calamities and has been growing so the need for refuge centers are gradually arising. As the necessity to protect and shelter people becomes ever more important, the problem tackles on providing disaster proof refugee and rescue center.
The concept was simple and straight forward. Dubbed the "Building Blocks of life" the proposal strategizes on modular construction for government calamity centers. Not only for the necessity to build faster but also to incorporate a sense of upliftment. People coming from natural disaster least deserve a place where they feel they are suffering. Thru an integral play on shades of the as the color of hope, somehow my concept wants to alleviate the sense of feeling somewhere safe and joyful. Simple structural forms show prowess and strength to reassure people that they are in a place of trust and safety. the whole complex is comprised of administration, educational centers for kids, housing , dormitories and a chapel.

Shanghai China Expo - 2008
The World's fair or what we now call World Expo has always been a competitive environment for architects around the world. It is a way to showcase one's motherland and how it wants to portray itself to the rest of the world. The challenge was to design the Philippine Pavilion for the coming world expo in Shaghai, China. The Objective is to design a monumental piece that mirrors the values, culture and aspirations of the country as well as it's dedication t sustainable development.
The concept latches itself to a traditional Sailing boat from the South. "Sail to the Philippines via Vinta " expresses the countries colorful and hospitable environment. The Vinta a sailing boat represents the Philippines as an archipelago that has 7107 islands. The structure towers over a parabolic curve that covers a space serving as the main exhibition hall. the solar panels coated with the countries national colors glow amidst the striking white contrast background of the envelope.

Musician's Dream House - 2008
There is no place like home is an understatement to this Musicians Dream House. One of the fun projects I ever tackled, the project challenged me to design for a client who is well inclined with music and a performer himself. The challenge was to incorporate concept of form to relate a mans love for music and blend it to his requirements and needs.
The concept plays with the shape of a G-clef found at the start of every musical stanza. Fairly evident on the side elevation the shape of the clef forms the sections of the building that is situated on a steep slope that overviews a contemplative countryside vista. As you park by the canopy, you are greeted by an infinity pool and as you continue to walk to the side stairs lead you to the main bachelors music pad where the music and creativity is nurtured. The lowest part of the house is a concrete patio that serves as the outdoor respite area.

Tropical Laboratory - 2010
The project is an investigation of the premise how forms and shapes affect daylight and shade manipulation. As part year of the Fourth Year Tropical Design Studio from University of Santo Tomas , I have studied how prefabricated metal laboratories should be designed to optimize daylight and shade that affects the approach to the structure and performance of scientist inside the building.
The result of that investigation was a fin-shaped protruding metal structure that is oriented in the west covering an almost fully glazed core working space. The structure was studied in a constant timeframe at the hottest month of the year in Manila which was March 2010. Using 3dSmax and Revit to input the sun path, the study started to record the suns vector and shade created from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The findings show that oblique forms that parabolically curve towards the east has greater potential to absorb energy and cast shadows for shade.

Manila Observatory - 2009
As a precursor to my undergraduate thesis Meteorolohiya Manila, this investigation on observatories has started to address challenges on designing mixed-use occupancies to further enhance the capability of observatories to be self sustaining places of research and recreation. This investigation of form and function relates to the fact the that publicly owned observatories are hardly ever funded by the government and a way to sustain itself as a landmark is to incorporate some form of new use.
The concept dealt with the ability of form to intimidate and catch attention. the form derives itself from a story of how Philippine Architecture was born through vernacular forms. As the structure intimidates and catches attention it draws people in it, and visibility for a monumental project like this is essential for success. Random towering oblique structures form the whole facility which house commercial facilities , museums and the observatory above.

National Aquatic Center - 2008
The Philippine Sports Commission is in dire need of new facilities to cater to the depleting ability of it's athletes to compete in international sports competition. The need for a new facility is instigated by the fact that in 2007 Manila hosted the Southeast Asian Games. The design problem addresses the need for a National Aquatic Center that houses research and venues for aquatic activities.
The concept is derived from the Kinetics of the human body and the juxtaposition of fluidity and symmetry. Movement is synchronized with architecture forming huge curves of wave and fluctuations shown thru fluid tensile design. The entire complex sits on a main elliptical loop tat travels the entire site. Close to the bay are concessions and commercial leasable spaces for leisure and dining after a swim game.

Revit Studio - 2007
The following rendering were created as my first models for working drawings in Autodesk Revit. It was created using Revit 2009 and purely rendered from the same program. The training was composed of two projects, the first one is a single family residence and the other an office building. We were asked to generate the whole set for design development and the renderings associated for presentation.
Mother & Child Hospital - 2008
This competition plate was assigned as a group for the 3rd Year studio class of the University of Santo Tomas. The problem concentrated on providing a 30 bed ward mother and child hospital for a predominantly Muslim region. As a part of the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations to decrease the numbers of fatality of on childbirth. One of the main challenges with this project is the culture and how The Muslim culture affects the planning of the hospital as they segregate what is men and women.
The strong Concept of for the project lead it to win First Place. The concept was conceived from a Traditional Muslim House in the South. A "Bay Sinug" themed hospital was born thru studying the traditional crafts and forms of the nomadic sea tribe. The plan completely incorporates culture to the hospital carefully considering that opposite sexes should as it should be separated. What was unique o the hospital was a lot of green spaces incorporated to in the program so it promotes an open and haling environment.
